This study investigates the current levels of emotional intelligence (EI) among community members in Old Havana and examines the connections between EI, sustainable tourism, and local development. Previous research has shown that emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in shaping community engagement and enhancing interactions between locals and tourists, fostering positive experiences and sustainable practices. However, there is a lack of studies specifically addressing how EI influences local development and its integration with tourism in culturally rich destinations like Old Havana. The research aims to: (1) assess the existing levels of emotional intelligence among community members; (2) explore the relationship between EI and community engagement in tourism activities; and (3) identify how EI influences the community’s capacity for local development. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, data will be collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with community members involved in tourism. Preliminary findings suggest that higher EI levels among residents contribute to improved communication, conflict resolution, and collaboration with tourists, leading to more harmonious relationships. Furthermore, enhanced EI may empower community members to take active roles in tourism planning and management, ensuring that tourism development aligns with local values and sustainability goals. This research underscores the importance of EI in fostering sustainable tourism practices and advancing socio-economic well-being in local communities, providing valuable insights for integrating EI training into community development initiatives.
