Suicide is a phenomenon that concerns all societies, as it affects a large part of the population, becoming the second leading cause of death among young people. Therefore, the WHO prioritizes suicide prevention worldwide, and to achieve this, demographic characteristics and risk factors associated with suicide attempts must be observed to propose, develop, implement, and evaluate effective prevention strategies. In this study, anonymized data was collected from the Open data portal of the Medellín Mayor's Office, MEData. These data correspond to suicide attempts in the city confirmed by healthcare providers from 2013 to 2020, recording basic patient data as well as risk and triggering factors and the mechanism used. This information was studied with descriptive analytics to understand the circumstances surrounding suicide attempts in the city. This study identified characteristics such as the age groups with the highest concentration of cases, the most commonly used methods, and the most common triggering and risk factors, as well as the neighborhoods of the city with the highest concentration of events. Based on these results, strategies can be proposed from different perspectives to contribute towards the reduction of suicide attempts in the city of Medellín.
