Descripción
We propose a panel that considers that importance of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) to the development of critical consciousness in the African Diaspora. We will discuss the possibilities of a maritime anthropology in Cuba as it relates to a shipwreck involving the UNIA’s Black Star Line in Havana. Further, we will discuss Malcolm X’s critical engagement with both the UNIA and Cuba. In a moment where these sorts of discussions are being challenged in the United States, we as Black scholars in the US, will argue for the importance of including the histories of Black internationalism and Pan Africanism in the educational curriculum. As scholars of Black Studies, our work centers these connections.
