Descripción

Cuban tobacco is known worldwide for its high prestige. It has become a myth, culture, tradition and even a unique product. The Cuban tobacco industry has maintained a tradition that is transmitted between generations and that has placed tobacco as one of the island's traditional exportable products. Hence the importance of carrying out an exhaustive study of it that allows knowing its entire chemical composition and avoid possible counterfeits. Many of the techniques used to determine metals are destructive and generate waste, leading to increased analysis costs. In this work we present an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) procedure, a non-destructive and environmentally friendly technique, which allows the quantification of Mg, K, Ca, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe and Sr in raw material samples. (gut) for the manufacture of export tobacco. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the results obtained by XRF to perform a qualitative evaluation of the raw material samples belonging to three different zones. The content of Fe and Zn markedly separates zone 1 from the rest, while the latter have a higher content of K, Ca and Cu. The high potential to classify raw material samples according to their origin and the possibility of authenticating Cuban tobacco (finished product) was demonstrated, giving added value to it in its commercialization in the international market.
