Descripción

No.1 enemy of mental health and recovery

Definition, prevalence, role of awareness & fighting it

Kingdom of Bahrain, is a small country in located in the middle east. As in most parts of the world, societies and cultures, people who are struggling with mental health conditions are stigmatized. Stigma can be defined as the societal disapproval or placing shame on individuals who seek help for any mental issue. It sometimes affects mental health professionals too.

Prevalence

Stigma, as I have noticed, is more common in conservative communities, where long-standing traditions dictate many social practices.

Other types of stigma

In the following article, I discuss ways mental health stigma, including stigma towards people with substance use disorders and their self-stigmatization as well. I also explore how stigma and self-stigmatization can be leading causes of relapse and deterioration of mental health conditions in SUDs, which can result in death in many cases. I have personally witnessed some of these cases when I volunteered in Drug Addiction Recovery Centers. I also address the direct effects of stigma on marriage in Bahrain.
The article/participation is based on my clinical work observations as a trainee and volunteer, as well as the observations of mental health professionals (their names and positions will be mentioned in the detailed work).

Conclusion

Stigma can be considered as an illness itself, but its treatment starts from the community and especially the new generations
